Uitgangspunt van dit boek is dat lichamelijke integriteit en multiculturalisme in de context van jongens- en meisjesbesnijdenis ambigue noties zijn. Vraag is of de praktijk van besnijdenis al dan niet als een laakbare aantasting van de lichamelijke integriteit moet worden beschouwd. Ook de spanningsverhouding tussen een cultuurrelativistische ethiek en een universeel mensenrechtenstandpunt wordt onderzocht. Besnijdenis, zowel van jongens als van meisjes, is een complex onderwerp, zoals de auteurs tijdens dit onderzoek hebben ondervonden. Aan een aantal aspecten hebben zij maar in geringe mate aandacht kunnen besteden. Gebaseerd op empirisch en normatief-ethisch onderzoek hebben de auteurs zich primair gericht op de situatie in Nederland. Het normatief kader bestaat vooral uit de noties 'lichamelijke integriteit' en 'multiculturalisme'.
